The world's 932 giant oil and gas fields are considered those with 500 million barrels (79,000,000 m 3) of ultimately recoverable oil or gas equivalent. Geoscientists believe these giants account for 40 percent of the world's petroleum reserves. They are clustered in 27 regions of the world, with the largest clusters in the Persian Gulf and Western Siberian Basin. Natural gas is generated through the same process of geological thermal cracking which produces petroleum from kerogen. Consequently, oil and natural gas are frequently found together. A natural gas field is a deposit rich in natural gas. Nearly 80% of the world’s natural gas fields are located in ten nations. The United States is the top oil-producing country in the world, with an average of 17.87 million b/d, which accounts for 18% of the world's production. This is up from the 15.6 million b/d in 2017.
